Unfortunatly you will not be able to pay for an expired subscription with account balance, you need to pay with an active credit card or with paypal linked to your account.

Because it is an active subscription service that requires a credit/debit card, PayPal account etc to charge the reccuring bill for the subscription. You will have to clear the past due payment using a valid payment method. You can then turn off auto renew at https://account.microsoft.com/services and then be able to purchase Live Gold using account balance.

If you have it as credit and it is still valid then you should be able too use it.

You can pay with your balance for subscriptions but you must have a credit card or pay pal as a backup.

No not true, paying a past due balance needs a credit/debit card or a PayPal account. You can not pay with Microsoft account balance.

You need to pay it with real money, through a debit or credit card. Otherwise, people would use avenues like Rewards Points to trade in for Xbox credit, and use that to pay it, therefore never actually "paying" for the account balance themselves and this is not allowed. You must pay for it yourself, with your money.
