So basically, Steam for movies. Gotcha.

EDIT: In all honesty, there's nothing any industry could do to fully get rid of piracy. It's just not possible. Although I'd love to see a service like Steam that's tailored for movies, it won't fix the piracy problem, and the entertainment industry will always complain about piracy.

NO DRM. Allow users to download the movies in various formats to their hard drives.

We all realize that Steam is a form of DRM, yes?

level 2

Better yet, Steam should start to offer movies.

level 2

I'm just hoping Netflix moves everything to instant.

The second line of text in the image says it's like Steam. So yes, like Steam.

level 2

Well, except for the no-DRM it's not too far off from iTunes either. One problem with the Apple movies store however is that there's just not enough there, the number of titles is hugely limited.

level 2

Yes, which is exactly what the header on the image says. Not sure why it needed being sarcastically repeated.

level 2

They don't have it for all devices, but doesnt amazon prime let you buy movies? I'm not sure, but i think it works like their mp3 service that forced apple to remove the restrictions on their mp3s?

level 2

This assumes that there even is a piracy problem. Piracy is only a problem if the industry counted on selling physical discs to an audience that doesn't want or need them anymore.

level 2

Big difference between Steam and a similar movie service. With Steam, it is difficult to pirate the games because it's difficult to play online without signing into Steam. With movies, one could just open up a screen recording program and easily pirate a movie in 2 hours and then upload it to the internet, even with really really strict DRM standards.

level 1

So how would this differ from Vudu? Or Amazon Instant Video? Or Lovefilms? You can rent movies in each of those and also buy them. Only difference I can think of to that steam for movies is that I can actually use steam (sometimes living in Europe sucks).

level 2

Wow good finds! I have never heard of any of those. I like vudu- but man is that pricey. Prices like those don't compete with piracy.

Edit: looks like amazon is cheaper but still more expensive than buying a bluray. It should be cheaper since there is no packaging and distribution costs.

level 2

Just like netflix, these services still have problems.

  1. Not generally user-friendly

  2. Don't offer a large selection, don't offer movies in a timely manner

  3. Prices are still steep.
